Inspired by Retrowave
Neon Threds is inspired by the retro video games and movies from the eighties and nineties. This classic arcade game style experienced a resurgence in the 2000s with artists playing homage to the 8-bit graphics and music from their youth. At first referring primarily to the music genre, the style has been alternatively referred to as Retrowave, Synthwave or Outrun; the latter being the name of the classic driving video game that was released in 1986. Ultimately these terms were used more generally referencing retro aesthetics like neon lights, sunset graphics, and wireframe art.
The Retrowave style and music has also been heavily influenced by classic movies like Tron and Blade Runner, and achieved renewed popularity with the release of tv shows like Stranger Things. The Netflix show’s music and styling references classic horror and sci fi films by 80’s icons like John Carpenter.
